This week: Labor and Delivery Stories

awoke around 8 am one Sunday morning in February with a dull ache in my lower belly area. I didn't think much of it as I went about getting ready for church. We were having a potluck that day, so I began preparing a casserole to share with the group. Throughout the next hour and a half, this ache grew constantly more painful. Have had gas pains in the past with both my pregnancies, I took a gas medication and went on with my day. While dressing, I almost fell over from the pain I experienced. I told my husband that he had better get me to the clinic to see what was going on!
Since I was not due to have my daughter until April, and I had to be induced with my first baby, it never crossed my mind that I was in labor! That is, until sitting in the passenger seat of our truck for the 20 minute drive to the hospital. I could see the clock on the console, and my pain was coming about every 2 minutes! After arriving at the emergency room, they admitted me so they could see what was going on. I was already 10 cm dilated and having my baby right then! I arrived at the hospital around 10 am. My daughter, Ayla, was born about 10:20 am. My doctor barely arrived in time to deliver her! She was 6 weeks early, and only 5 lbs 4 oz at birth. However, she was perfectly healthy. I am so thankful that everything went so smoothly; I found out later that our hospital, being a small one, does not like to deliver preemies - they would have moved me to a larger facility if I hadn't been in such advanced labor! The hospital staff was great, and we had some very shocked grandparents on the phone in no time. My son, then 3, was thrilled to be a big brother!
